Octavius is a highly technical solo that explores the octave interval (hence the name) and is suitable for the advanced high school or college marimbist. A slow chorale in the middle gives both the audience and performer a rest from repetitions of flashy runs and ripple permutations; a great ending for any recital.

An extended version of Octavius can be found on the album “Departures” by Andrew Thomson.
“Octavius” is an animated marimba solo that combines multiple playing styles into a tour-deforce piece to showcase the marimbist’s skills. It includes things we all love about the marimba: beautiful, mysterious chorale style; showy, quick-paced rhythms and runs; the breadth of the marimba’s range. Technically challenging, “Octavius” is a perfect selection to add excitement and diversity to a performance. The composer writes, “‘Octavius’ is a highly technical solo that explores the octave interval (hence the name) and is suitable for the advanced high school or college marimbist. A slow chorale in the middle gives both the audience and performer a rest from repetitions of flashy runs and ripple permutations; a great ending for any recital.”
