Bubby's Bounce - Andrew Blair [DIGITAL]

Dedicated to the composer's young son and his favorite bouncer, Bubby's Bounce is a work for solo snare drum and fixed electronic track. The accompaniment is built from a few simple melodic and rhythmic motives, transformed into a lo-fi hip-hop aesthetic. Samples of his son’s bouncer and other toys are woven into the track, making the sound world both playful and deeply personal.

Program Notes
Bubby’s Bounce is an etude for solo snare drum and electronics inspired by my son, Ben, and his favorite bouncer.

As he was learning to walk, the steady bounce of his swing filled our house. I found myself captured by its rhythm, which became the foundation of the piece. The music imitates that bouncing pulse through a quintuplet feel—often grouped 3+2—which most closely approximates the rhythm I heard daily. The number five also appears harmonically: the fifth of many chords is altered in some way, reflecting the sense of imbalance we all experience when tackling something new.
