Shimmer was written out of Clayson's desire to create a solo that could be performed with beginner-level percussion ensembles. Many pieces exist for advanced solo marimba with advanced accompaniment, but few are written specifically for beginner soloists with even simpler accompaniment. The piece gets its title from the use of metallic instruments in the accompanying parts, which add a brilliant, shimmering quality to the rich tone of the marimba.
