Written as a Christmas gift for the composer's goddaughter, Maddie features a expressive melodicism through rubato, moving lines. A brief rolled chorale showacases the rich qualities of the lowest octaves of the marimba before returning to the opening melodies and bringing the piece to a close.

Program Notes
I wrote Maddie for my goddaughter as a Christmas present in 2010. The piece is a ballad that should be performed with a fair amount of rubato at the players discretion. Mallet selection for the piece is an important consideration since there needs to be clarity in the outer sections and a warm, connected tone during the chorale. The performer may wish to make a mallet change, but it should be executed very quickly so there is not an uncomfortable break in the musical flow.
