Focusing on developing a true legato timpani stroke, exploring various stroke types for weighted accents, and exploring different sound capabilities of the instrument; Treading Lightly serves as a great stepping stone in beginning to work towards performing one of Elliot Carter’s Eight Pieces for Timpani.

Instrumentation Timpani (5 drums)
Program Notes I wrote this timpani solo for my student Marcus Alonzo while he was studying timpani with me in the fall of 2016. The piece itself focuses on developing a true legato sound on the instrument, while also exploring different stroke types when executing differently weighted accents. Throughout the piece I use staccato markings to indicate for the performer to strike the center of the drum. The title of the piece refers to how one should prepare a performance of the piece, avoiding any major execution issues due to the quick changes from playing in the center of the head to playing in the normal position. This piece is a great stepping stone to beginning to work towards playing one of Elliot Carter’s Eight Pieces for Timpani. -JWMIII
