Program Notes
Re:Flections was commissioned for the Churchill Junior High School Honors Percussion Ensemble for the 2026 NJMEA Convention.
After cleaning out a closet at school, I stumbled across a set of desk bells. My goal was to create a fun and unique percussion ensemble piece for our talented CJHS students - something that would challenge them in new ways while still honoring their strengths. I also wanted this piece to groove! Re-exploring some cymbal stacks sealed the direction the piece would take.
Like a reflection, the set-up is mirrored, with players facing one another to enhance communication. Many parts function as opposites of their partners: for instance, the vibraphone and marimba lines at letter A mirror one another to produce a new syncopated composite rhythm in the higher notes. The metallic colors of the percussion and desk bell parts build on this idea through interlocking polyrhythms. At the beginning, the desk bells split a 3:4 pattern between players using the pitch set C/D/F/G; at letter C, Player 1 continues the 3:4 polyrhythm while Player 2 introduces a 4:5 polyrhythm. These textures create a shimmering, metallic, rhythmic surface — like overlapping reflections.
The muffled bell cymbals were chosen not only for their unique timbre, but for their reflective appearance, reinforcing the visual and musical concept. Their steady presence provides a unifying pulse, helping the ensemble lock in as the more intricate rhythms echo and interweave. Achieving a sense of equality among all performers was one of my primary goals; each part contributes something essential to the collective sound.
Lastly, Re:Flections is a play on words. “Re:” means “once more” and allows the players to repeat similar patterns, providing the groove and foundation of the piece. In addition, “once more” is a nod to our students and how dedicated they are to practicing and making our program amazing. This piece would not exist without their continuous hard work. Reflecting on my own teaching, they inspire me to be a better teacher every day.
