Drawing inspiration from the rudimental playing of Charley Wilcoxon and John S. Pratt, "second line" New Orleans drumming, and the genius of of Steve Gadd, More Than Meets the Eye challenges the hand-foot independence of the player while helping to develop and understand variations in the rudimental stlye of drumming.

Program Notes
More Than Meets the Eye is a culmination of my rudimental snare and drumset background. Beginning with a soft solo snare passage and slowly incorporating the bass drum, the first section encourages the player to explore their understanding of early rudimental drumming in the style of Charley Wilcoxon and John S. Pratt.
The odd meter development section serves as an aggressive transition passage for the player to develop their solo phrasing with the bass drum. The energy of the growing pulse in the 5/8 meter gives way to a bass drum solo with a solid open roll as its foundation.
With a “second line” New Orleans feel, this portion of the piece was inspired by my experience as a drummer in a New Orleans-style Brass Band. With pressed rolls and wider flams, this section allows the player to incorporate solo phrasing between both the snare and the bass drum.
Ending with a Steve Gadd-like approach, More Than Meets the Eye challenges the hand-foot independence of the player while helping to develop and understand variations in the rudimental style of drumming. I hope you enjoy!
