Program Notes
I was fortunate to serve as an Artist in Residence for a month at the Studios of Key West in Key West, Florida. Through the lens of residents, tourists, coworkers, and friends, I grew to appreciate just what a rich cast of characters call this tropical island home. Soon the island's most profound treasure came in to focus – community. To celebrate this exchange, it has been an honor and privilege to pen this collection of new works for the 4.3. octave concert marimba entitled Mile Marker Zero.

This is a fantastic collection of medium to medium-difficult marimba solos. These solos appear to be mainly programmatic and, as a group, paint a compelling portrait of the multifaceted area that are the Florida Keys.
These solos are suitable to be performed alone or as a group. The composer uses many interesting compositional techniques, including whole-tone scales, playing with the shafts of mallets on the keys, odd meters and groupings, and interesting run patterns to illustrate each solo’s intended portrayal. The collection is a perfect choice for students who are looking to expand their expressive and physical abilities on the marimba. Mile Marker Zero would be an excellent addition to any professional or student percussionist’s repertoire. I recommend it for both. The idiomatic writing demonstrates both the beauty and power of the marimba in one book. Plus, with a variety of musical styles included, there is “something for everyone” as well as for any performance setting.
