Cuban dancers would describe mambo as "feeling the music," in which sound and movement were merged through the body. This original work features many familiar licks and riffs from several of the famous mambo-artists from the twentieth century. While not exactly composed in traditional mambo form, it's certainly Mambo 'Nough to have audiences on their feet and dancing along.

Each melodic part should be represented within the pan ensemble to effectively complete the chordal harmonies. If an individual style pan is not available, it should be substituted with a secondary pan. (e.g. The Double Tenor part may be performed instead on a Lead/Tenor)

Rhythmic patterns are provided for each percussion part, however, any variations within the mambo style may be performed.

    1. Percussive Notes New Literature Review

This work for steel band incorporates elements of the mambo into a fun tune. The title refers to this not being a straightforward mambo, but “mambo enough.” It is written for a standard steel drum ensemble along with timbales, maracas, guiro, and congas. The composer also offers suggestions for more traditional instruments so that it can be performed as a percussion ensemble work.

Rhythmically, the work is fairly straightforward with a driving bass line and syncopated melodies in the top drums. Loud, accented interjections throughout the tune make for an enjoyable experience, with the five sections each slightly changing the groove and melody. One section offers solo opportunities for the drum set, timbales, and congas. However, it would not be too difficult to add in some solos on the pans as well.

“Mambo ’Nough” is a fun and energetic tune that would be great for an intermediate group of players. The style and groove will lend itself well to any steel band or percussion concert and is sure to get the audience moving.
