Hymn offers a moment of stillness in contrast to the often loud and fast-moving world of percussion repertoire. Designed as a palate cleanser or interlude, it invites both performers and listeners to pause and recalibrate their minds, spirits, and ears.

    Program Notes
Hymn offers a moment of stillness in contrast to the often loud and fast-moving world of percussion repertoire. Designed as a palate cleanser or interlude, it invites both performers and listeners to pause and recalibrate their minds, spirits, and ears.

While entirely secular, Hymn draws subtle inspiration from the pacing and restraint of sacred music, particularly the quiet dignity of choral hymns and liturgical chant. The interplay of metallic resonance and warm, grounded hand drums creates a textural dialogue reminiscent of bells and breath, ritual and touch. These contrasting timbres suggest a kind of sonic devotion that is simple, spacious, and deeply human.

Rather than showcasing technical virtuosity, the piece centers on ensemble blend, sensitivity, and the expressive potential of soft sound. In this way, Hymn becomes less of a statement and more of a held space. In this space, all are invited to reflect, rest, or simply exist.

Inspired by my reflections on this piece, I wrote this poem to guide performers and listeners in their own interpretations:

    Veils of sound unfold,
    of tintinnabulation,
    to dance with the earth.
