Inspired by the beauty of Texas Hill Country and the spirit of lasting friendship, Hillside Sketches (Overture) is an exciting Grade 3.5 work that features bold brass fanfares, sweeping woodwind lines, and sparkling percussion writing, all woven together with lyrical themes and rhythmic drive. With its blend of adventure, warmth, and musical color, it evokes the timeless festival style reminiscent of James Barnes or Alfred Reed—making it a compelling choice for concert or contest performance.

Program Notes
Hillside Sketches is a spirited and heartfelt tribute to one of my dearest friends, Dr. Jonathan Villela. Inspired by the rolling landscapes and vibrant energy of Austin, Texas—Jonathan’s home and a city that has become synonymous with creativity and connection—this overture captures the warmth, strength, and authenticity that define our friendship.
The title Hillside not only references the iconic topography of the Texas Hill Country, but also symbolizes a place of elevation, perspective, and peace—qualities Jonathan brings to the lives of those around him.
Musically, the overture unfolds with a sense of adventure and openness, blending lyrical themes with energetic rhythmic interplay. A soaring melodic line represents the joy of lifelong friendship, while bursts of bright brass and driving percussion reflect Jonathan’s bold spirit and unwavering support. It is my hope that Hillside Sketches evokes both the natural beauty of central Texas and the immeasurable value of a trusted friend.
Hillside Sketches was premiered by the Cedar Park High School Symphonic Band on Monday, April 28, 2025, conducted by Dr. Jonathan Villela.
