Program Notes
Caden Hong, a young student from Honolulu, was inspired by percussion ensemble music and made it his goal to commission new works for his group. With the support from his teacher, Zachary Morita, he was able to gather funding and connect with current composers. I am thrilled to be a part of this commissioning project for the Hawaii Youth Percussion Ensemble.

The IGNITE Series for the Developing Percussion Ensemble
This unique series was designed specifically for young percussionists as they experience the magic of playing in a percussion ensemble. Each piece provides the director and students with great flexibility – from the number of players to the tempo to the instrumentation.
Light a fire under your students today!
Commissioned by the Hawaii Youth Percussion Ensemble, “Get Hyped!” is a flexible work for minimal instrumentation geared towards younger performers that is as high energy as the title suggests. The piece is roughly three minutes in length and has a low technical demand and high musical energy that will make it great for younger players.
The piece is part of C. Alan’s “Ignite Series,” which consists of flexible pieces geared towards younger students. “Get Hyped!” sticks with this by requiring only a single drum and cymbal of each performer’s choosing. While the piece has four written parts, the composer states, “You may perform with as few as four players or with as many as you have in your percussion ensemble.”
Musically, the work consists of eighth-note based patterns, with different players punctuating various notes with either an accent or cymbal hit. Angela Kepley varies this texture through the piece with different dynamic shifts as well as shifting the focus from the drum to the cymbal as the dominant texture in the middle section of the work. The various techniques used in the piece, from muting the cymbal to specific dynamic instructions, are all clear and easy to apply to the performance.
Directors looking for an energetic piece for younger players that requires minimal instrumentation may find what they’re looking for in “Get Hyped!” The flexible instrumentation and forces required make this a great piece for your library. In addition to the technical experience students will gain with this piece, it could be a perfect vehicle for younger players to perform without a conductor and with which to develop some chamber-music experience.
