Program Notes
Delmar Street, in St. Louis, was, in the early 1900‘s, the home of the “King of Ragtime,” Scott Joplin. It was here that he wrote some of his best known compositions, including The Entertainer, Elite Syncopations, and Ragtime Dance. When I lived in St. Louis for several years I would frequently drive down Delmar Street and imagine Scott Joplin strolling down the boulevard, whistling his next ragtime hit.
Delmar Street Rag is a tribute to this great style of American music. The music begins with a classic slow tempo rag and then moves into a quick, double-time march-style rag. The wonderful melodic style and syncopations of ragtime are throughout both sections.
