Program Notes
CarTunes is a fun three-movement suite about automobiles with lots of personality. The first movement, “Connie Convertible,” is a free spirit enjoying a sunny day. Connie’s music begins as a bright jazz waltz with some interesting meter changes to keep everyone alert. The second half of the movement finds Connie on the freeway, dodging big trucks and traffic but still having fun with a quick march. “Jerry Jalopy” is an old timer, but still able to make the journey. He just rattles and shakes a little more than he used to. Auxiliary percussion take the spotlight in this movement, portraying poor Jerry nearly falling apart as the drive goes on. “Randy Racer” is the fastest car on the road. Gleaming bright paint job and powerful engine, he’s a superstar—and maybe just a little cocky. Randy’s music is a hard-driving rock and roll inspired groove.
