Program Notes
Now carefully arranged for brass band, these rousing variations are based on the old English sea song “Spanish Ladies.” After a dramatic introduction, the tune is stated in the minor mode twice. Later in the piece, the tune takes on a lighter character in the major mode. In the Grainger-esque third variation, the tune is triumphantly restated and the piece ends with a grand and inevitable conclusion. Fans of the classic English band music of Vaughn-Williams and Grainger will certainly enjoy this piece.
