Unclear Faces (Duet for Marimba & Multi-Percussion)

Unclear Faces was completed in January of 2017. When I began writing this piece in the spring of 2016, I was in a very uneasy place in my life. My path was unclear in terms of work, school, and friends. I felt lost. I started writing this piece to feel a sense of escape, something that was sure and steady. Unclear Faces represents a point, any point, in someone's life when it is unclear what is happening. The piece represents this through its motivic use of three versus four polyrhythms, which is constantly switched between performers. It is also heard in the melodic and harmonic devices, and in the instrumentation contrast between a marimba and a multi-percussion setup.
