    1. Percussive Notes New Literature Review

“Two Illusions” is a fun addition to the two-mallet keyboard solo repertoire. The first movement, “Moonlight Shadow,” frequently utilizes each hand as its own voice, with one hand accompanying the other. The musical material is often accessible without being overly simple, allowing the player to explore beyond a diatonic pitch collection while remaining grounded within the key of C minor. A clear melodic line is repeated and elaborated upon throughout, as well as a substantial passage involving rolled figures. This movement uses repetition without becoming repetitive, and is a great solo for a young marimbist. The second movement, “Vicious Fishes,” is faster than the first movement and written primarily in an asymmetrical meter. Though there is a section involving rolls, it is not as substantial as in the first movement. The composer utilizes extended tonality throughout, most notably the whole-tone scale.

Of the two movements, the second is more demanding, though both have their tricky spots. Each movement is pleasing to listen to, and both are great options for younger players who wish to work on a two-mallet piece for marimba.

This exciting musical compositions of Moonlight Shadow and Vicious Fishes both bring out a sense of adventure. Although they may not seem challenging pieces, they are excellent compositions for teaching dynamics, balance of tone, and phrasing.
