    Program Notes

Written to incorporate three different styles of drumming into a single work, Three Cycles showcases the versatility of the snare drum performer over three diverse movements accompanied by traditional battery percussion, timpani, and electronics.

The first movement, “Then...” was written with the idea of regimental drumming in mind. The opening statements can be thought of as communication between two troops, one near and one across a field. The second movement, “Now...” showcases the finesse and attentive musicality through the orchestral snare drum style. Finally, the third movement titled “Soon To Be...” showcases the full extent of the performer’s technical and creative abilities through a demonstration of contemporary marching music to an electronic backing track.
