Sunset opens with low chant -like lines over which we hear the soft murmur of the Dies Irae. A spiritual mood prevails. Cadences of ever increasing intensity are heard only to recede into moments of hushed anticipation. Through ever increasing melodic tension the work moves inexorably toward its final climax. A gentle mystical coda unfolds and the Dies Irae reappears. The piece ends solemnly with a long diminuendo leading to silence.
