Program Notes
Storm is a 3-movement marimba duet meant to evoke the aesthetic of experiencing a storm. The first movement, Approach, alternates between two ideas: an aggressive and chromatic rhythmic motive performed in octaves meant to represent the lingering anxiety of knowing that a storm is approaching, and a more beautiful and melodic motive that shows the optimistic but still worrisome side of preparing for a storm. The second movement, Storm, is aggressive and heavily chromatic, emulating the chaos and violence of a storm. The finale, Calm, is a tonal chorale consisting of drones and slow moving lines, evoking the feeling of the calm after the storm. Each movement consists of a recurring chord progression, creating a sense of stability and survival even when a storm is raging.
