Program Notes
Spencer Variants was commissioned by the Central Michigan University Percussion Alumni in honor of retiring Professor of Percussion Dr. Andrew Spencer. Andrew and I were faculty colleagues during my tenure at CMU and he enthusiastically performed many of my works for percussion. As a colleague he was continually supportive of my music and new music by many contemporary composers. His percussion program at CMU has grown to be nationally recognized. It has been an honor and a privilege to write this piece for my friend and colleague.
The work is a set of eight variations on the name "SPENCER."
