Program Notes
Mateo de Pérez de Albéniz (c. 1755-1831) was a Spanish composer and theorist. He served as maestro de capilla (choirmaster) in churches in San Sebastian and Logroño. His compositions include a large number of sacred works including masses, Vespers, motets, and villancicos. Many of these pieces survive in manuscript at the various churches at which he served. He also composed piano music and wrote a theoretical book on Renaissance notation. Albéniz promoted heavily the music of Haydn and Mozart to his students and the broader Spanish population.
