Program Notes
Set the World on Fire, for SATB Choir and Wind Ensemble, was commissioned by Siena Heights University for their 100th Anniversary; Daniel Kesterke, Director of Bands, and Kelly Ford, Director of Choirs. The text is comprised of quotes from the writings of St. Catherine of Siena. The text and music are divided into the following sections:
Introduction (moderate and mysterious)
I have no desire in this life save to see the honor of God, your peace, and the reformation of the Holy Church,
and to see the life of grace in every creature that hath reason in itself.
Part I (fast)
Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring.
Out of darkness is born the light.
Proclaim the truth and do not be silent through fear.
Part II (slow and expressive)
The human heart is always drawn by love.
There will be love in proportion to faith,
and faith in proportion to love.
Love transforms one into what one loves.
Part III (fast and aggressive)
You are an ever-burning fire;
You are a fire which drives away all coldness
and illumines minds with its light,
and with this light you have made known your truth.
Finale (fast and celebratory)
Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire!
