Remembering a Friend was composed in memory of Leading Seaman Colin Hughes, Royal Australian Navy, who was tragically taken from us in September 2012 whilst on duty in Cairns, Australia. The piece opens by paying slight reference to the tune ‘The Watermill’ by Ronald Binge, which Colin used to regularly perform as a solo on his primary instrument, the oboe. Later on, the Naval Hymn ‘Eternal Father’ can be heard as a reflection of Colin's naval background, both within the Royal Marines Band Service and the Royal Australian Navy.
