This piece for rudimental snare drum and its title, is essentially a bit of reverse psychology essentially encouraging the player to "quit" quitting and push yourself to achieve something you may have never thought you could.

Quit... was written for my student Kathleen Camero to play as a jury piece in the fall of 2017. As percussionists, we encounter a plethora of instruments daily and we are required to master a level of proficiency each of them. So in essence, there are times when we are required to practice an instrument that we may not be extremely fond of because we don't think we are "good" at it. That instrument varies from player to player.

Sometimes when we are practicing the instrument we aren't so fond of, our tendency is to quit practicing, thinking we will never be as good as "so and so" on that instrument or that we will just never "get it." This piece and its title, is essentially a bit of reverse psychology essentially encouraging the player to "quit" quitting and push yourself to achieve something you may have never thought you could. I hope you enjoy playing Quit... and I hope it inspires you to achieve your dreams in ways you didn't think possible.

    1. Percussive Notes New Literature Review

“Quit…” is a rudimental solo for concert snare drum, appropriate for students who are perhaps more familiar with the rudimental or concert tradition and need to strengthen their skills on the other. It is a groovy and approachable composition, with an easy-to-follow structure and opportunities to work on rudiments and musicality. Joe W. Moore provides suggested stickings throughout, even for each drum roll.

This solo is perfect for an intermediate player: Moore employs all the fundamentals of rudimental drumming in a challenging manner, yet not too complex. In his rather inspirational program notes, Moore explains the title, discusses practicing the instruments that are the most difficult for you, and ends with this thought: “I hope you enjoy playing “Quit…,” and I hope it inspires you to achieve your dreams in ways you didn’t think possible.” Another educational, challenging, fun work from Joe W. Moore III!
