Program Notes
Pushing 30 combines elements of American Jazz, Caribbean and Indian Classical music. Based around a 29 beat cycle, much of the rhythmic tension and resolution is created by employing devices commonly found in Indian Classical music. The piece explores the coupling of this rhythmic tension with harmonic and melodic tension as well. Being a performer of all three of these instruments, I wanted to blend not only their unique timbres but also the musical traditions from which they come.
Performance Notes
The tabla player should have a basic knowledge of the instrument and how to interpret the bols provided. The part includes many common figures found in tabla repertoire and should be phrased as such. The tabla solo works well if the player creates their own kaida or rela with paltas and a ti-hai to finish.
