I wrote Phase 15 during my freshman year of college. At the time, my upperclassmen colleagues were performing works by Francisco Perez, Ivan Trevino, and members of Third Coast Percussion. As I listened to my rehearse, musical ideas started coming to mind. Having past experience composing and arranging, I decided to try my hand at a chamber piece.
During this time, I often played the card game “Phase 10” with my friends. Combining that with the frequent appearance of 15/16 in this piece, the name for the percussion trio was self-evident. Phase 15 was premiered by the Wright State University Percussion Ensemble in 2024.
