Program Notes
Commissioned by and dedicated to Blue Door Percussion, Crystal Skies is a percussion trio composed with both instrumentation and performance space limitations in mind. The set-up of a shared vibraphone and glass bowls creates a work that requires minimal equipment and is adaptable to a variety of performance venues. The soundscape of Crystal Skies mimics the refracting light as it passes through crystal. The piece explores this concept through three main sections, representing light before, during, and after interacting with the crystal. The glass bowls, semi-pitched through the use of water, create a unique and resonant texture when played alongside the vibraphone.
