Though the journey of life is filled with mountain tops of excitement, there are always valleys where mountains are present. Just as sure as there are moments of excitement in life, there will be a return to the valley. These desolate valleys of life are often marked by hard times and struggles, but through these hard times there can be optimism for the future. The outlook can still be one of encouragement, as the next exciting mountain is just on the horizon.

    1. Percussive Notes New Literature Review

This piece is meant to convey both the low and high points of life. It explores those emotions through the use of space, rhythmic density, and dynamics. The beginning and end of the solo are to be played “freely,” while the rest of the piece is in time. The rhythms will be relatable to the listening audience. For example, a Baião-style foot ostinato is used as one of the main ideas, with the hands playing sixteenth-note rhythms. Hemiolas and metric modulation are utilized, allowing the rhythms to interweave seamlessly. While much of the solo is in common time, other time signatures such as 3/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, and 10/8 are also used. An open solo section allows the performer to add his or her own personality to the piece. Dynamics are featured as well, with swells occurring throughout the solo. Stickings are only added when needed to attain a certain feel or to facilitate movement around the set. Almost any phrase can be practiced separately and utilized as a groove or fill. Drum set players will enjoy the rhythmic challenges encountered within the piece. The audience will also enjoy this solo due to its combination of musicality and groove.
