This work explores the full five-octave range of the marimba, written especially to exploit a virtuosic and romantic approach to the instrument. The work is written in a somewhat free fashion – certain sections lack bar lines – allowing the performer to make his or her own interpretation.

Program Notes
NightSong was written for Samuel Solomon for one of his recitals at the Juilliard School, where we were students together. It was then performed at the Clark Studio Theater with choreography by Rebecca Stenn. This work explores the full five-octave range of the marimba, written especially to exploit Sam’s virtuosic and romantic approach to the instrument. The work is written in a somewhat free fashion – certain sections lack bar lines – allowing the performer to make his or her own interpretation.
A recording of Sam Solomon performing NightSong can be found on Paola Prestini’s CD, Body Maps (Tzadik, 2008).
