Nice to Know You showcases the expressive capabilities of both the instrument and the performer. The piece is a reflection on the composer’s various memories one might have from losing a loved one. There are feelings of sadness but also moments of joy that remind us it was Nice to Know You.
Genre: Solo Vibraphone | # of Players: 1
Level: Medium | Duration: 4:20
Instrumentation
Solo Vibraphone (3-octave)
This piece reflects this most obviously in the varied tempi, time signatures, and characters of various sections throughout the piece. The sections trade off between delicate melodies underscored by arpeggiated accompaniment and monophonic lines. The piece is very well marked with intended rubato and dynamic changes, which allows the performer to capture the varying emotion of each section. There are no extended techniques included in the work, except for one mallet dampen, and pedaling is left up to the performer’s discretion. This would be a great addition to any recital for which the performer is looking for a touching, lyrical work for vibraphone.
