Program Notes
The 25th anniversary of Salvation Army work in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico was celebrated with a number of events, including a visit by the New York Staff Band of the Salvation Army. Las Lluvias Grandes was written with the intention of presenting music which could relate in some way to the traditional music culture of the island. The title (las you-vias-grandees) in literal translation from the original Spanish means ‘The great rains’. The percussion is an important part of the arrangement and could be enhanced with the conductor’s discretion. It is recommended that maracas be an essential part of the set-up.
