Program Notes
Although Frederic Delius was born in Bradford, England in 1862, he lived in Florida for a number of years and then settled in France until his death in 1934. He was comparatively untutored as a composer and his music is free-spirited and inspirational. Delius wrote six operas and the third of these, Koanga, was an early work written from 1895-97. La Calinda is a dance sung by black slaves at their wedding festivities.
