Program Notes
Jubilant Overture was commissioned by the H.B. Whitehorne Middle School Gold Band, Verona, NJ. The commission was made possible thanks to a grant from the Verona Fund for Educational Excellence. Special thanks to Mr. Dan Halpern, director of the Gold Band for starting the whole grant process and seeing it through to the end. Jubilant Overture was conceived as part of a project in which students in several of the English classes at the school were asked to compose poems based on any subject of their liking. Several of the best poems were then submitted to me and I chose one that I felt would work well as an inscription to this newly composed work for band. My choice was a poem by 8th grade student Cathleen Paluszek titled “Everything is Variant.”

EVERYTHING IS VARIANT

The rain drops to the ground.
The flowers begin to burst with color.
The birds sing with joy.
Everything is blissful.

The weather if full of heat.
The beach is storming with people.
The sun is shinning.
Everything is amazing.

The trees ripple with the wind.
The leaves begin to crash.
The breeze is crispy.
Everything is peaceful.

The air is chilled.
The snow is sticking.
The fireplace is growing with warmth.
Everything is merry.
