Program Notes
Fresh from attending an early music festival featuring Purcell, Handel, and their predecessors, I decided to write a composition utilizing the ground bass (repeated bass line) from Dido’s Lament in Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas. The third and fourth movements of Four in Three for Two hold to this scheme, while the first and second movements present original Baroque-flavored musical ideas. My goal was to give marimbists a Baroque composition of their own, since Purcell, Handel, Bach, and the rest inconveniently died before the marimba could be invented.
