Program Notes
Fantasy for Marimba Quartet is a character piece for marimba quartet that begins with a strongly articulated meter and a stark sense of tonality. Subsequently, the meter becomes obscured along with an ever-increasing sense of tonal ambiguity. As the piece progresses, the elements of clarity and obscurity are gradually superimposed upon one another until the recapitulation. The piece ends with a procedure in which I overlay the essence of the finale measure of Scriabin’s Seventh Sonata over the final measure of his Eighth Sonata, implying a superimposed process.
