Elegy for the Broken is a slow, lyrical ballad for vibraphone, written as an intimate meditation on love, resilience, and vulnerability. Inspired by witnessing a loved one endure chronic pain and autoimmune challenges, the piece explores the tension between fragility and steadfast presence. Chronic illnesses are the “invisible monster” that many people face–it’s something many of us undoubtedly feel while others look on from the outside at pain that cannot be physically seen on the surface.

Through its gentle, reflective melodies and lingering harmonies, the work seeks to honor both the weight of suffering and the quiet strength of enduring love. Each note carries the duality of sorrow and solace: moments of delicate vulnerability are met with persistent warmth, suggesting the light that remains even in the darkest times.

While the music acknowledges the profound challenges of witnessing pain and feeling helpless, it also celebrates the human capacity to be a source of comfort and support. "Elegy for the Broken" is an ode to those who, though marked by struggle, are met with unwavering compassion and care—a musical testament to love as both witness and refuge.

Performers are encouraged to take liberties with the tempo markings throughout the piece. Measure 36 is also marked as an optional improvisation section for the right-hand melody, but it is heavily encouraged that you do this if you are comfortable improvising and use this to tell your own story.
