Program Notes
Ready To Launch (2’00”)
This is one small step for a band, one giant leap for their collective musical careers. The band is strapping themselves in for the ride of a lifetime – that of a musician. It has taken loads of work to get to this point. They are as ready as they will ever be. It is not without risk. There is much that can go wrong. But they are trusting that their preparation and their capable commander will see them through. They are ready to launch!
Boil Them Cabbage Down (1’50”)
A hearty breakfast of hoecakes and cabbage soup kept many cowboys going in the American Frontier. This energetic folk song was passed down around the prairies and sung around many campfires. There have been many versions of the lyrics, most relating to cooking cabbage and cornmeal, but also others relating to dogs, mountains, possums, mules, and of course, true love.
The Lone Knight (1’15”)
In the Middle Ages, Knights were sworn to a code of Chivalry, which charged them to “protect the weak and defenseless”, and to “never turn their back on a foe”. Picture a solitary knight riding across the plain to the aid of the defenseless. The knight unsheathes their sword and clashes with the foe in a thrilling battle of good versus evil.
March of the Diggers (1’35")
The term ‘digger’ is a military slang term used to describe soldiers from Australian and New Zealand. This colloquial term became prominent in World War I when the two countries fought together on the Western Front. Imagine the unison footfalls of the proud young men and women as they march side-by-side to this rousing tune.
