The Clinch River stretches 335 miles from Viriginia to Tennessee. This work follows the river from its humble beginnings, through its rapids and rougher waters, to its triumphant merger with another river & lake.

Program Notes
The Clinch River tailwaters begin around Tazewell, Virginia, stretching 335 miles through the mountains into the counties of Russell, Wise, Scott, and Lee until crossing the state line into Hanock County Tennessee, where it deposits into Norris Lake in Union County, Tennessee, The Clinch River has been an important part of our growth in the area, as well as providing the first settlers with transportation and fishing. This movement follows the river from its humble beginnings in Tazewell, through the rapids and rougher waters of Scott and Lee County, and finally, its triumphant merging with the Powell River and Norris Lakes. Hints of Down To The River To Pray can be heard throughout the movement, as the river has been a traditional place of baptism for many churches on the river’s banks, specifically on River Road in Castlewood, Virginia. This piece was extracted from a larger three-movement work titled “Southwestern Virginia Portrait.”

The SpectraFlex Series for adaptable wind band offers flexibility with pieces across all grade levels, featuring traditional high-to-low scoring with 5 or 6 parts and optional percussion. Each part is transposed and playable by a multitude of wind or keyboard percussion instruments while maintaining the spectrum of sound we have grown to love about the wind band.
