Catch and Release (Solo Timpani)

Following the story of a fishing trip, Catch and Release offers a unique performance experience to a student at the intermediate level. With the use of a superball mallet and plastic brushes, in addition to more traditional timpani mallets, this piece offers the perfect opportunity to introduce extended techniques for the timpani to a student. Catch and Release also highlights a theatrical element of soloistic playing, encouraging the performer to experiment with different characters in their performance.

Program Notes
Catch and Release was inspired by a recreational fishing trip. The timbres explored within this work intend to represent the depth of water, the passing of time (waiting for the fish to bite), and the fickle nature of outboard motors. This piece features the performer using extended techniques, such as using a superball mallet and plastic brushes on the timpani drums.
