Program Notes
Inspired by the African marching song “Siyahamba,” this lively original work is designed to musically transport the listener on an African safari. This piece maintains the traditional “Call-and-Response” performance format and utilizes melodic material shared with all sections of the band. There are ample spaces for the drummer to improvise along with optional solo opportunities for trumpet, flute, bari sax, and bass guitar. This is a great chart to teach a variety of syncopated patterns that are reinforced through homorhythmic repetition in the piece.
