Bright Lights in a Dark City is based on the idea of removing all artificial light from a metropolitan city to reveal the true beauty of the night sky. The piece tells the story of a city going to sleep as stars begin to awaken and populate the darkness. The ethereal atmosphere in the opening moments creates a lonely mood. As the piece progresses, the rhythmic motion increases as half notes and quarter notes gradually morph into sixteenths. This culminates in a flurry of rapidly accelerating sixteenth notes to represent the overwhelming number of stars that truly rest in the sky, unseen on an average night. The piece concludes with a shift from night to morning, while longingly playing reused material in remembrance.
