Program Notes
Bounce Pass is an exercise in swing for young jazz ensemble. As the title suggests, it depicts the joyous movement of a ball during a sporting event. The rhythm section should have fun with this piece, playing chords and grooves that are accessible without being cliché. The left hand of the Piano does not always double the Bass. There are opportunities for solos in Alto Sax 1, Tenor Sax 1, Trumpet 1, and Trombone 1. These can be improvised or played as written. There are optional parts for Tenor Sax 2, Flute, Tuba, and percussion (bongos or congas). The piece can be effectively performed if these parts are not covered. The characteristic rhythm of the piece is simply two 8th notes in a row. The piece ends with this simple idea on beat 4.
