beneath painted skies... blends and balances the sonic energy of two very distinct percussion areas - the marimba and the drum set - like the cloudy diffusion of intense colors in a sunset sky. Fiery and groovy at its core, this duet features equal collaboration from both percussionists, with moments for improvisation.

This work was composed at the request of two of my former students at UNC-Pembroke, as an outlet for musical expression of the joy and energy found in close friendship.
The marimba part is playable on a 4.3-octave marimba, and is extended by percussion interjections on bongos, a splash cymbal, and bamboo chimes, as well an extended section on djembe.
The drum set part is written for a standard 4-piece kit, with a sizzle cymbal and cymbal stack in the place of crash cymbals.
