World Dances, by Stephen Roberts, is a suite of four dances, each with a distinctive rhythmic character. It is designed to be easy, but enjoyable, to play and was originally commissioned by the National Schools Band Association. The first movement Bhangra Dance evokes the colourful atmosphere of India with its traditional Dhol drum beat and modal melodies. Island Sun is a lazy celebration of West Indian heat and can include a steel drum band. Mexican Festival evokes the samba dance with its exotic Latin rhythms inviting a street party. Safari Tanzania includes optional African djembe drums and celebrates the spirit of Africa and its rhythmic vitality.
