Warrior is a work for solo trumpet and band that focuses on the more lyrical abilities of the trumpet rather than its technical prowess. The work tells the story of a young Spanish warrior heading into battle. The opening theme is stated by the solo trumpet. It is a theme of loneliness, separation from his family and the uncertainty of what he is about to face. As the piece continues, the warrior sets off on his journey. It is a faster, more developed version of the opening theme. The middle section of this piece focuses on the nobility and bravery of the man. A calm, simple theme gradually builds to epic stature. Full chordal brass is accompanied by woodwinds and solo trumpet ostinato. The piece intensifies as the warrior continues his quest for victory. After the victorious battle, as the warrior begins his quiet journey home, the opening theme is recapitulated to capture a sense of the warrior’s exhaustion. The piece culminates in a joyous and epic ending as the warrior is reunited with his family.
