This profound setting of the familiar William Billings hymn “Chester” is the basis for the material in this dramatic tone poem for symphonic band. The hymn tune is presented in a straightforward fashion after the powerful introduction. This is followed by the main body of the piece, which is a deconstructed version of the melodic line placed in contemporary rhythmic and harmonic settings. Both color and rhythmic vitality are obtained from extensive use of percussion; and the meter changes, while frequent, have a natural feel. The close of the piece is emotionally stirring and artistically satisfying.
