Unrest is a recital piece at its core, featuring solo trumpet over the accompaniment of piano and a diligent string ensemble. The strings may allow for a rich narrative landscape—if not textural, than one of almost desolation beyond any singular person’s means. The trumpet solo requires expression of intentional immaturity and reluctance to the setting through interpretation of performance. The character of the solo may be interpreted as hotly afraid, observant, immature, with the veneer of overconfidence. The piano acts as our omnipotent voice of reason, purveying a pensive sense of judicial authority against the trumpet’s existential conflict.

This selection lends itself well to collegiate ensemble programming while providing pianists and trumpeters an emergence into respective solo repertoire. Unrest is a palatable 21st century composition catered to the growing needs of solo experience, ensemble style through accompaniment, and musical interpretation for the collegiate ensemble.
