Demonstrating an extreme economy of space, Tight Quarters is scored for four players on a single, shared xylophone, with an optional glockenspiel part playable by one to three players, again on a single instrument. Alternating between composite arpeggiations, simple melodies harmonized in parallel motion, and ensemble scale figures, this chamber ensemble work is captivating in its simplicity and an excellent opportunity to consider and workshop ensemble choreography.

For a larger ensemble, the xylophone parts may be doubled on marimba and the optional glockenspiel part may be doubled on vibraphone. If a xylophone or glockenspiel is unavailable, the piece may be performed on marimba and optional vibraphone. With the exception of xylophone 4 in measures 22-39, all eighth notes and longer and all repeated sixteenth notes on a single pitch should be performed with one hand. A graduated set of medium to hard yarn, cord, or rubber mallets is recommended for the xylophone. Hard plastic mallets are recommended for the glockenspiel.
“Tight Quarters” offers a melodic keyboard piece playable by any quartet or more with an instrument standard in many band rooms. Josh Gottry writes the work for a core quartet playing on one xylophone, with an optional trio playing on a glockenspiel. The online video demonstrates the xylophone-only rendition, and after comparing that with the audio recording including bells, the piece can truly be played either way without disrupting the performers’ or audiences’ experience and enjoyment.
Compared to other works in the Ignite series, “Tight Quarters” is a bit more challenging. Requiring syncopated rhythmic accuracy, coordination with other members of the ensemble, and execution of scalar sixteenth notes by three of the players, the piece will challenge everyone on the xylophone. The glockenspiel parts are relatively simple and repetitive, although they include some syncopated rhythms. The variety of difficulty within the seven parts allows for part assignments to match the diverse talent levels inherent in a young ensemble. Gottry’s ensemble includes flexibility in both instrumentation as well as size, making for a good option for a range of programs. The relative difficulty compared to other ensembles for younger players provides for a more challenging keyboard experience for more advanced students.
I would recommend this piece for a young high school quartet or an advanced middle school quartet, adding the glockenspiel and doubling other parts if more players are available. At just over three minutes in length, “Tight Quarters” is quick and exciting, both musically and visually.
