Program Notes
The first movement of Syncoshift was written in 2011 for the Kepley Studio Percussion Ensemble’s summer season. Since the ensemble did not have many instruments at the time, I composed this piece for four players to be on one instrument. The players must work together not only to create musical phrases and layers, but also to share the same physical space. Your ears may not be able to identify four separate parts, but rather one voice that is continually expanding and evolving before breaking down into a new or altered direction. Movements two and three came to life in 2017 when ideas were revisited and the piece expanded into its current version.
